Circulation and Transport Processes during an Extreme Freshwater Discharge Event at the Tagus Estuary

نویسندگان

چکیده

During the winter of 2013, Tagus estuary was under influence intense winds and extreme freshwater discharge that changed its hydrodynamics and, consequently, salt heat transport. Moreover, dynamics may change due to climate which will increase frequency waves mean sea level. Therefore, it is utmost importance study impact future in air temperature level events, such as ascertain foreseen changes water properties transport within near coastal zone. Several scenarios were developed explored, using Delft3D model suite, considering results CMIP6 report forcing conditions. Before event, mixing region presented well-mixed conditions marine area a slight stratification. filled with migrated toward coast, leading lower values inside estuary. SLR has higher on salinity stratification patterns than increase. The response directly related temperature. mouth shallow regions be more prone upstream projected are linked CO2 emissions scenarios, being intensive highest emission scenario.

Atmospheric and oceanic freshwater transport during weak Atlantic overturning circulation

Oceanic and atmospheric freshwater transports are analyzed in a numerical experiment where induced freshwater in the North Atlantic slowed the thermohaline circulation (THC). During times of weak Atlantic overturning circulation, it is found that the Intertropical Convergence Zone moves southward and trade winds at tropical latitudes increase, resulting in enhanced water vapor export out of the...

Salinity and freshwater discharge determine rotifer distribution at the Mossoró River Estuary (Semiarid Region of Brazil).

The present study aimed at evaluating differences in rotifer distribution in three estuarine zones in an inverse estuary located in the Semiarid Region of Brazil. Zones were chosen based on their proximity to the ocean and river border as a means of reflecting a horizontal salinity gradient. High freshwater discharge during the rainy season was the major determinant of rotifer composition. On t...

Bioturbation and Erodibility of Sediments from the Tagus Estuary

Bioturbation can modify the biogeochemical properties of cohesive sediments and affect sediment stability. Here, we investigate the effects of the clam, Scrobicularia plana, on the erodibility of estuarine sediments. Muddy sediments with different mud contents were collected with minimal disturbance at Ponta da Erva, Hortas and Samouco in the Tagus Estuary. S. plana 40.7±0.3 mm length, (mean ± ...

Circulation and Suspended Particulate Matter Transport in a Tidally Dominated Estuary: Caravelas Estuary, Bahia, Brazil

The circulation and transport of suspended particulate matter in the Caravelas Estuary are assessed. Nearlysynoptic hourly hydrographic, current (ADCP velocity and volume transport) and suspended particulate matter data were collected during a full semidiurnal spring tide, on the two transects Boca do Tomba and Barra Velha and on longitudinal sections at low and high tide. On the first transect...

Water-air CO2 fluxes in the Tagus estuary plume (Portugal) during two distinct winter episodes

BACKGROUND Estuarine plumes are frequently under strong influence of land-derived inputs of organic matter. These plumes have characteristic physical and chemical conditions, and their morphology and extent in the coastal area depends strongly on physical conditions such as river discharge, tides and wind action. In this work we investigate the physical dynamics of the Tagus estuary plume and t...
